In the movie below , Bar Basso owner Maurizio Stocchetto tells the history of Bar Basso and how it became a design-world institution during the Milan furniture fair, before mixing one of the cocktails served on the night.


Dezeen – the influential on-line design magazine and Wyborowa Exquisite Vodka ( the Polish premium vodka whose bottle was designed by Frank Gehry ) celebrate at the most famous Milanese cocktail bar of Milan.


Bar Basso is an institution in Milan during the Salone … Maurizio Stocchetto, the extraordinary founder of what has become an institution in Milan, cherishes a 2004 issue of Icon in which his Bar is the pivotal subject of a journalistic story by Marcus Fairs ( director of Dezeen ) then reporting for UK Icon magazine :

The Salone seen through Bar Basso … ( after  few negroni’s no doubt ) …. 

It’s said that there are two drinks by which a bartender’s skill can be judged. They are a Martini and a Negroni.

The Negroni was created at the start of the 20th century for a Florentine aristocrat, Count Camillo Negroni. Bored with his usual cocktail, an Americano, the Count asked the bartender to perk it up a bit. The bartender added some gin and, from that day on, the count drank only the Negroni cocktail.


Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add Campari, vermouth and spumante, in that order. Gently stir and garnish with orange slice.

1 part Campari     1 part sweet Vermouth    1 part gin or dry spumante

Fill a shaker with ice and add the three ingredients. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Serve garnished with a twist of orange

negroni sbagliato

The house specialty at the legendary Bar Basso in Milan translates as “wrong” or “mistaken” Negroni—a fitting name for a cocktail born from a happy mistake. When making a Negroni, a misplaced bottle of spumante was grabbed by accident. An instant hit, the drink became the bar’s signature.
