Australians @ World Architecture Festival 2011

The WAF Awards celebrate architectural excellence the world over and allow architects to showcase their talent and their unique responses to the ever-changing economic climate. There is now an increasing need for innovative approaches to architecture, inspiring architects and designers to think in new ways about buildings.

Michael Heenan

Michael Heenan is a principal of Allen Jack + Cottier Architects (AJ+C) in Sydney, Australia with 100 architects in offices across South East Asia.

He is presently designing a number of new cities with disruptive environmental strategies where urbanity and ecology share equal status.

As well as residential, commercial, sporting and educational buildings, Michael enjoys the challenges of new and unique projects such as the largest cooking and dining facility in the world (5,000 seats and 200 chefs), a new living quarters in Antarctica using the latest composite boat building technologies, a 350 metre long car racing facility that seats 2,000 guests, the fitout of a 30 metre boat and a new 6,000 seat sports stadium.

Michael’s role in Allen Jack + Cottier has helped the practice become one of the most recognized in Australia. His participation has resulted in the practice winning international design competitions and numerous Awards for Excellence in Architecture, including consecutive Blacket prizes, Sustainability and Public Architecture Awards.

After exhibiting in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2009, Michael became the Chair of the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW) Awards for Excellence Jury in 2010 (Commercial and Interiors), and won the Best Sports Building in the World Architecture Festival in 2009

James Grose

Working across a full range of project types and scales, James Grose has consolidated a position of accomplishment in the architectural profession through design innovation, built works, awards, professional leadership and publications.

Starting at the end of the 1980s with his own practice, Grose Bradley Architecture, before becoming a Principal of BVN Architecture through a merger in 1998, James was appointed BVN’s National Director in 2006.

James currently leads the Kinghorn Cancer Centre project and recently completed the Brain and Mind Institute at The University of Sydney

Michael Rayner

Michael Rayner is the Principal of Cox Rayner Architecture whole Helix Bridge in Singapore won last year’s WAF Award for Transport Architecture, and his entry this year is the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane.

Michael is an Adjunct Professor in Architecture at both the University of Queensland and Griffith University, in addition to Chair of Architecture, Griffith University. He is a long term member of the Queensland Premier’s Smart State Council, and of the Queensland Design Council. His own house was only four months completed when inundated by the 2011 Brisbane floods, causing him to pursue flood resilience strategies and to design new typologies for housing in particular.

In 2011, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to architecture and the Queensland community.

Robert Backhouse

Robert is the Managing Director of international design practice Hassell – ranked Australasia’s largest architecture practice in the 2010 BD World Architecture survey.

Robert has built a reputation for design innovation through delivering major projects in Australia and Asia. His broad portfolio of built work includes a range of commercial and residential work from some of the world’s largest and most complex workplaces to unique apartments and houses.

An interior designer who promotes collaborative, transdisciplinary design practice, Robert’s work has been widely publicised and recognised by several major awards. He is regularly invited to speak and contribute articles for publication on latest thinking in interior architecture and design.

ANZ Centre, ANZ Bank’s new global headquarters in Australia, was the overall winner of the 2010 World Architecture Festival Awards Interiors and Fitout category. Robert was the design director for the interiors on this project.

It always amazes me how talented and creative designers can be. I don’t have a creative bone in my body, I’ll just stick to paying for it!
