Sex in the City – Sydney style

THE SMART GIRL’S GUIDE TO SYDNEY

HP Contest >> Design the ideal “Me And My City” tour of chic hot spots. //  Give us (in not more than 500 words) the scoop on all your favourite treats in your city that spell style – it could be your secret place for knockout shoes, quirky bags or the dress for that special night out, or groovy places to chill out with your BFFs and have a bite or a martini.  In short, places where you get to the good stuff.

If the fabulous four from Sex in the City were transplanted to Sydney, where would they live, shop, eat and party?

Entry by Simone M

Just like the girls, parts of Sydney have their individual style and vibe; here is my city through their eyes.

If I were Carrie….. I live in a terrace house in the backstreets of Surry Hills. Since that fateful episode my computer crashed, I changed to an Hp Mini and never without backup (HP 320GB pocket drive). I write on my laptop from cafes in my suburb: Mint, Book Kitchen, Bourke St Bakery or Patisse. I shop at eclectic boutiques on and around Crown St; a mix of new (Dress Me Darling, Paris Texas), vintage (Coco Repose, Grandma Takes a Trip) and rare films and books (Title). I travel far and wide for shoes; William St Paddington- handmade, recycled designer (Pelle, di Nuovo) and new (Belinda), Potts Point (Booty), Woollahra (Quincy) and David Jones (for Manolos and Louboutins).

If I were Samantha….. I live amongst the action in a fabulous Penthouse in Darlinghurst, furnished from the nearby Dedece. Morning coffee at Bar Coluzzi (where I admire passing men), before going to work at my PR business in Double Bay, where I peruse the designer fashions (Christensen Copenhagen, Cosmopolitan shoes). I power lunch everywhere; Woolloomooloo wharf, Fratelli Paradiso at Potts Point after which I cruise along Macleay St, buy funky homewares (Blueprint, Macleay on Manning), a glamorous dress (Becker Minty), designer gear for my pooch (Paws Point), healthy food (Fratelli Fresh) and adult toys in adjacent Kings Cross.

Charlotte, Miranda and Mr Big  follow on  below   …………

If I were Charlotte….. I would live in Woollahra amongst the art galleries hidden in the backstreets, close to my local synagogue and Centennial Park where I jog. I breakfast at Bills and furnish our home with pieces from neighbouring antique and homewares stores (Orson and Blake), stock up on gourmet food (Simon Johnson) and browse the boutiques here (Nicola Finetti) or nearby William St (cashmere at Sonya Hopkins, dresses at Leona Edminston, Collette Dinnigan).

If I were Miranda….. Forced to move across the bridge, I sold my apartment in Woolloomooloo and moved to a more spacious house in Mosman. I catch the ferry to work in a law firm in the city, where I power lunch with clients at Café Sydney, Aria and Quay. On a weekend, the girls brunch at Bondi, walk the Bondi to Bronte, sunbake, browse Bondi markets and shop along Gould St’s one-off boutiques (Jatali). They drink cocktails at Water Bar or Tonic Lounge, dine at Longrain, China Doll or North Bondi Italian, catch a movie at Verona, a book signing by Carrie at Berkelouw on Oxford or a play at Wharf theatre. A late night sweet fix from Gelato Messina or a pie after a long night partying from Harry’s Café de Wheels.

Just as in New York, Mr Big is elusive and difficult to catch. You might find him jogging around the domain at lunchtime, launching his yacht on the Finger Wharf or drinking at Hugo’s lounge.
