Il Manifesto @ Salone Milan 2018

Il Manifesto @ Salone Milan 2018

Now in its 57th year, the Salone del Mobile underpins what is widely regarded as the design industry’s most important Design Week. But the event has faced some criticism in recent years, over both its’ organisation and its content.

This has sparked the very first Salone del Mobile.Milano Manifesto, an affectionate tribute to the city, a declaration of intent geared to channeling the forces in Milan to work together to preserve the leadership role of both the city and the trade fair, and attract ideas, projects and new resources

The Salone del Mobile’s Manifesto targets these issues and more, with its rallying cry for the industry …….. ” To give shape to the sort of design and architecture that is more conscious of the needs of a constantly evolving society. It also encourages companies, architects and designers participating in the fair to challenge production processes and service methods in order to Stay ahead of the Game”.

Invitations @ Salone Milan 2018

Here once again is a collation of some of our favourite invitations which crossed our desks in preparation to the upcoming Milan Design Week 2018

With over 1500 exhibitors at the Salone del Mobile Fairgrounds, and as many again outside the Fairgrounds scattered all around the city, the world’s best design companies know that their invitations are the first representations of the products they’ve spent the year refining.

Tom Dixon = A No Show @ Salone Milan 2018

Tom Dixon = A No Show @ Salone Milan 2018

The undisputed protagonist of Fuorisalone will be notably absent this year.

After 27 years of uninterrupted presence at the Milano Design Week, and every single time as the highlight of Fuorisalone in a crescendo of installations and events on an ever larger scale, appeal and success, this year, Tom, the rebellious and unpredictable hero of British design, surprises us again, but in another, truly unexpected, way – this time by NOT presenting his new collections in Milan.

Instead Tom will place all his bets on his new London Headquarters and his World Tour- which he has already embarked upon

Beyond The New Manifesto @ Salone Milan 2015

Beyond The New Manifesto @ Salone Milan 2015

One of the main talking points of this year’s Salone Milan 2015, was Beyond the New, a strongly worded manifesto critiquing the design industry, written by designer Hella Jongerius and theorist Louise Schouwenberg that challenged the state of contemporary design.

Jongerius and Schouwenberg argue forcefully that industrial design has become stagnant, with genuine innovation replaced by too great a reverence for commercialism and the production of new products for newness’ sake.

Beyond the New suggests design has become “an empty shell, devoid of meaning and substance” and deplores “the obsession with the New for the sake of the New”.

100 x 100 Achille @ Salone Milan 2018

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Achille Castiglioni, the Achille Castiglioni Foundation entrusted the curation of an exhibition to Chiara Alessi and Domitilla Dardi, who created the project concept — to ask 100 Italian and international designers to write and send to Achille a congratulatory Birthday Card and at the same time, to give to him their favorite anonymous object.

The ” 100 x 100 Achille” exhibition is as playful and design-saturated as he would have loved.

Design and craftsmanship continue to be at the heart of Mindcraft that, in its tenth edition, presents a project curated by Ditte Hammerstrøm.

In this year’s exhibition, the objects on display take centre stage, with an emphasis on the hands-on engagement with the material and the visual, aesthetic and sensuous qualities of the objects.
