Interni House in Motion @ Salone Milan 2018

Interni House in Motion @ Salone Milan 2018

This year, marks the 20th Anniversary of the much lauded event from Interni Magazine, ‘House in Motion‘, the event brings together a series of experimental and interactive installations of architecture and design.

It’s a collaboration between highly acclaimed international designers, high profile companies as well as educational institutions and startups.

Each of the main sponsors are presenting a high-impact installation, designed by internationally renowned architects and in dedicated locations:

With the theme House in Motion, INTERNI puts the research towards two design areas that have been deeply influenced by the evolution of lifestyles: residence and mobility.

Two apparently opposite concepts, but with the changing dynamics of life today have brought closer – to the point of making them into a single entity.

First there is the home.

Considered the ‘mirror of the soul’ throughout history, today it is no longer formulated as a succession of spaces in which to gather objects, furnishings, memories.

The contemporary habitat concept corresponds to spaces that are ready to be transformed, where the furnishings and functions keep pace with the evolution of the inhabitants, changing over time.

Furthermore, the idea of the home is also diffused, nomadic, transitional thanks to increased, easier mobility and the resulting need for temporary habitations, in tune with new opportunities for travel, work, exchange of goods and ideas.

This year the event took place in three different historical locations around Milan.

Università degli Studi di Milano (formerly Ca’ Granda, 16th century),

Orto Botanico di Brera (Botanical Gardens 18th century),

Corso Venezia 11 (the former Archiepiscopal Seminary, 17th century)

The Mondadori Group magazine called on leading protagonists from the world of Italian design and designers and architects of international standing to examine the theme of the “House in Motion”, in collaboration with companies, multinationals, start-ups and institutions.

The result is an extraordinary collection of over 32 exhibits, from installations (18) and design islands (14), to micro-architecture and macro-objects, all site-specific, that combine to create a mosaic of forward-looking styles and visions.

The designs interpret issues related to living and mobiliy which, increasingly intersect and contaminate each other to generate new lifestyles.

The home becomes a place that responds to the needs of those who inhabit it and adapts to their evolution; at the same time, places of transition, stopovers and work, such as means of transport, adopt the friendly and informal spirit of homes, in which technology has an increasingly decisive.

It is an exchange that generates new behavioural models and unseen design solutions.

Statale University of Milan Installations

The courtyard at the University of Milan held a series of experimental and interactive architecture and design installations.

2. Small House by Lorenzo Damiani For Ikea

The small house designed by Lorenzo Damiani for Ikea has a handle on the roof that makes it ideally transportable.

4. Built using elements supplied by the Scandinavian colossus, the interiors and walls reveal the adaptability of Ikea furniture in response to the idea of change.

The project is curated by architect Lorenzo Damiani is a small transportable house designed to meet the needs of everyone and our contemporary lives.

It is characterized by a fir wood structure with a natural finish. The peculiarity resides in the interiors where the surfaces are covered with modular IKEA components arranged in a heterogeneous way to create a single composition where a single element fades into the whole.

3. Visionair by Labics for Elica

Visionair, the reflective structure by the Rome-based architecture firm Labics invites you to discover a surreal and inverted dimension of reality, so celebrating the innovative approach by the Italian brand Elica, world leader in the sale of cooker hoods, which has always shown courage in exploring new worlds.

The idea behind the project stems from a reflection on the theme of reversal of the point of view, concept used by the brand Elica to describe the paradigm shift underlying the recent experiments on aspiring hobs.

The installation is a visible object inside the Ca‘ Granda, a small architecture that immediately communicates its presence; a structure that, when approaching, reveals itself, letting perceive the presence of a space inside, an unusual space that invites the visitor to enter a surreal and upside-down dimension of reality.

The act of crossing a threshold, of entering an interior space, alludes to the imaginary home, which welcomes and protects.

The choice of mirroring materials creates an abstract image from the outside and immersive from the inside. As in a kaleidoscope, the video images of the interior are broken down, overturned, recomposed in new forms, generating an unexpected story of which the visitor is completely part of.

4. My Dream Home by Piero Lissoni

My Dream Home is an installation of twelve superimposed shipping containers designed by Studio Lissoni Associati.

This eco-friendly, economical and versatile housing unit grew out of an idea by the photographers Elisabetta Illy and Stefano Guidani, who set up an exhibition here with photographs taken during a trip to Haiti in 2017.

The project, which also hosts an exhibition of drawings made by Haitian children asked to imagine their dream home, supports reconstruction of the island’s largest shantytown.

5. Future Space by Peter Pichler Architecture

Future Space was designed by Peter Pichler to show how wood can be used to create a spatial experience akin to Renaissance architecture. They worked with Domus Gaia (wood construction) and Zumtobel (illumination) to complete the project.

The symmetrical structure is inspired by the extraordinary quality of the Renaissance proportions of the courtyard of Ca’ Granda and plays with the fundamental elements of Renaissance style: Symmetry, proportion and geometry.

The project explores the potential of the material presence of wood in a non-typical “building” environment as a structure that should transmit a spatial experience and is made up of 1600 wood sticks (using fir wood) and an overall weight of 12 tonnes.

Three separate wings gradually changing in height by simply stacking and rotating different lengths of wood sticks (1.600, form a pyramid-like ensemble.  Visitors are invited to enter and explore the cave- like installation. The perforated structure filters light and evokes a playful game of light and shadow.

It forms three openings, one serves as the entrance and the other two provide views towards the courtyard of the university and other installations.

6. HousEmotion by Tabanlioglu Architects

Istanbul-based architecture firm Tabanlioglu Architects has installed an ‘abstract house’.

Called HousEmotion, the installation questions the notion of “home” physically and metaphorically, aiming to remove boundaries of the house in reference to “placelessness”, aiming to remove boundaries of the house in reference to “placelessness”.

The frame of the installation embodies the limits of the “house”, creating a sense of control, where the semi-transparent walls gradually introduces into the outer environment.

Tubes around the platform form the edges of the abstract house.

Establishing a sense of border, compilation of the rods grant an optical illusion beside depth and openness.

With soft seating units, beyond the imaginary walls of the house, the structure becomes a shelter; developing self-interacts with the family and the larger society the “house”, with its simple form and minimalist design, ensures familiarity with compact neat details.

7. Library in Motion by by Dario Curatolo for the Puglia Region

Also in the “pioneer” courtyard is Library in Motion, an installation which is strongly evocative  created by Dario Curatolo for the Puglia Region.

Consisting of the pages of a giant format book, the structure showcases community libraries as places of culture, exchange and social focus.

9. Home Co Thinking by Massimo Iosa Ghini

The idea of movement, contrast, multi-functionality and versatility within home walls inspired the concept of “Home Co-Thinking”, designed by the famous architect Massimo Iosa Ghini for the Fuorisalone 2018 to introduce the new surfaces for architecture of the brands La Fabbrica Ceramiche, AVA, Elios Ceramica, parts of Gruppo Italcer.

The installation, offers a model of a “shared” and convivial house, whose cornerstone is the interaction between places, people and functionality, while its innovative materials – wisely chosen – are able to support the new needs of living.

The place par excellence dedicated to sharing and conversation stands out in the Home Co-Thinking, with a table symbolizing the social aggregator, covered with large porcelain stoneware panels – 3.20 x 1.60 m – combined in a heterogeneous mix to promote an eclectic and dynamic aesthetic.

The large ceramic slabs stand out in the outdoors too, marking the open envelope. These are fixed to a steel supporting structure that links new stone, wood and marble effects.

10. Baldacchino by Stanton Williams Architects

Stanton Williams’ pavilion interprets the Interni exhibition theme House in Motion by giving physical form to the idea of movement through space.

Space and movement combine to form a work of choreographic architecture. A spiral pathway is spatially compressed and released as it winds into the centre of the pavilion. Here, at the focal point, the ‘baldacchino’ – a canopy of light – hovers over a horizontal plane that suggests rest and contemplation.

13. Colours in Motion by Aldo Cibic with Abet Laminiati

“We have always been fascinated by the idea that a work of architecture can have different lives. Usually that happens over time, but in this case we were interested in adding the possibility of also enjoying a construction in different places”………. Aldo Cibic

This is how Aldo Cibic explains the project “Colors on the Move”, presenting Diplos at House In Motion, in the Chiostro del Settecento at the Università degli Studi, Milan, in occasion of the Milano Design Week 2018. In a quirky design choice the roof of the project is actually a table.

The installation, in perfect harmony with the existing architecture, gives life to a free and open space that is connected to the outside, in which the materials, colours and furnishings create a pathway that is full of suggestions related to the idea of infinity, developed across three modular structures.

Infinite Movement, an installation that doesn’t just look at glam, but also at sustainability, thanks to the collaboration of Pinko X Treedom, made up of rotating geometric shapes, suggesting a timeless dance; Infinite Power, developed with the lingerie brand Triumph, a potentially infinite interlocking structure that takes over the Largo Richini portico with a series of high-impact graphic elements: slogans, images and icons, that intertwine to represent women’s strength and cohesion; and Infinite Beauty, conceived in collaboration with the vegetable cosmetic brand Yves Rocher.
