Salone Milan 2010 – Royal College of the Arts / Tord Boontje

Professor Tord Boontje, Head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art will be presenting work by 90 students and recent graduates of the MA course at this year’s Milan Salone del Mobile.

Occupying over 900 square metres of a disused factory in Lambrate – the old industrial district of east Milan – Hotel RCA promises to be one of the highlights of the design festival.

Taking the typology of a hotel, the work will be displayed in zones corresponding to the functions and spaces commonly found in the interior, such as the reception area, lounge and bedrooms. The exhibition will include the full range of design activity represented by this prestigious postgraduate course, including product design and furniture, as well as more conceptual and speculative work.

This is the first presentation of work by all Design Products students in Milan and with their new Professor Tord Boontje.   Commenting on the show Boontje said:  “This is a creative opportunity for our students to show their work at an international design event. We have invited last year’s graduates to showcase their finished products alongside current students who will also be designing and building the exhibition.”

Dirk Winkel /  Ultradur Desk Light

A high-performance LED desk lamp that has visible gas springs which enable a smooth movement. The solid plastic arms are not hollowed out as the material allows for a high wall thickness – celebrating plastic as a precious high-value and high-performance material.

Felix de Pass /  Boundary Desk

Boundary Desk is a multi functional desk system for the home / office workplace. The essence of the desk’s construction occurs in the corners where a singular repeated aluminium dovetail extrusion connects all the materials together, allowing for easy assembly / disassembly. The horizontal aluminium extrusion desk frame conceals integrated tracks to which various accessories are attached. Folded sheet aluminium drawers, cable management solutions and privacy screens can all be fitted allowing the elementary desk to adapt and meet the varying needs of the user and situation. By changing the lengths of the horizontal extrusions, the design can be made available in a variety of sizes to suit a variety of environments.
